A community isn’t simply a place to live, but should reflect how you wish to live. Increasingly, this includes a conscious desire to reduce environmental impacts.

Brookfield communities are meticulously designed to have a maximum impact on your health, happiness and well-being, while reducing the impact on the environment.

Balancing Growing Demand with Responsible Development

Brookfield Residential built our first community in Calgary in 1958, and our first Edmonton community in 1972. Today, Calgary’s metro area is home to over 1.6 million, while Edmonton recently surpassed a million. All those people need a place to live.

In designing our Master Planned communities, we have been guided by a commitment to sustainable growth. What does that look like?

Planned Steps with Cumulative Effects

Our master planned communities are thoughtfully created to seamlessly integrate responsible design with the natural look and flow of the community. It’s often the little things you may not notice, but very much appreciate, that add up.

BUILT GREEN® Communities – Coming Soon!

A BUILT GREEN Community is a neighbourhood or large-scale development certified under the BUILT GREEN® Canada program. It is a new program. The goal is to promote a higher standard of sustainability, energy efficiency, and environmental responsibility into community planning.
Brookfield Residential is on track to receiving BUILT GREEN® Level? certification in nearly 50% of our current Alberta communities by the end of 2025… with more to come.

High Standards for Certification

To become a designated a BUILT GREEN Level Community, Brookfield must design and build our communities to meet rigorous requirement:

Submit a comprehensive Community Checklist, covering seven (7) key environmental categories. Examples of key criteria include:

  • Habitat preservation/ reclamation
  • Proximity to public infrastructure
  • Transit & bike networks
  • Access to services/ amenities
  • Housing diversity/ density
  • Affordability
  • Recreation facilities
  • Light/ noise pollution controls
  • Energy efficiency
  • Water conservation
  • Sustainable materials and development practices
  • Safety and crime prevention
  • Animal-friendly design
  • Business practices and innovation
  • And much more

Demonstrate long-term sustainability planning

Provide verification and documentation throughout the planning phases

Receive independent certification through BUILT GREEN’s Canada's third-party process

Different Communities, Unique Approaches

Every time we develop a new community — or introduce new stages within a growing one — we seek new and dynamic ways to implement sustainability measures, which often become a trademark attraction. Some start out as innovative pilot projects that soon spread to other communities.
