ALBERTA’S SICK KIDS GET HELP FROM CARING FOR KIDS RADIOTHON

"Brookfield employees volunteering on the phone lines during the 2016 Caring for Kids Radiothon at the Alberta Children’s Hospital"

Community building is the heart of what we do.

Kids and families fill our neighbourhoods, so it makes sense to support same kids through the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation (ACHF).

For the eighth year, Brookfield is sponsoring the ACHF’s annual Caring for Kids Radiothon, a fundraiser for state-of-the-art medical equipment, research and family-centered care programs such as:

  • art and music therapy,
  • pet visitation and
  • play equipment.

Radiothon supports immediate needs

“The government gives us a great hospital but support from the community ensures it’s a world-class facility,” says Melissa McKenzie, Associate Manager of the Foundation’s Community Initiatives and Events team.  “The Radiothon funds our most urgent needs.”

The Radiothon is a three-day event hosted by local radio station Country 105, which broadcasts live from the hospital.

This year, on Feb. 8, 9 and 10, children and families who have benefitted from the hospital’s services join radio announcers to tell their stories.

Volunteers will answer calls from listeners and take their pledges.

Brookfield employees help out

Kurt Gibson, the Director of Field Operations for Housing, is part of Brookfield’s 20-person team.

“It’s a huge way for us to give back to the communities where we live, work and build. Our team is proud of the commitment we’ve made to the hospital.”

Brookfield provides 20 of the 315 volunteers needed to work on the phone bank during the Radiothon. It’s not difficult to convince our employees to work the phone lines.

“Once we put out the word this year, we had an over-subscription of volunteers,” says Kurt. “The spots were filled in about 15 minutes.”

Brookfield also helps cover the costs of the Radiothon. “This ensures every dollar raised goes directly to hospital,” explains Melissa.

During Brookfield’s ‘power hour’ on Friday at 5 p.m., Brookfield volunteers will receive pledges.
